Ed, our President, who hosted the lunch, reports that there was a big turnout. Despite the inclement weather 14 people came to the Japanese lunch. It was extremely nice of the Sushi Supreme restaurant to provide complimentary endamame appetizer and green tea ice cream dessert. It was a wonderful Japanese lunch for a wonderful price and service. Great intimate conversation including the Winter Olympics, which Michael got to see in Vancouver--he recently arrived in Toronto from a long trip. Next time don't miss this highly recommended Japanese hang out and LYC lunch. We guarantee that you will like it. For next month, we will do dimsum.

We just received an email from Tony Crespo, a gay NYC Police Officer, about problems the LGBTI community in the Philippines is having. Tony's email is included below. As he says, our brothers and sisters abroad need our help. Also, Tony's story as an out gay police officer who was presented with the Medal for Valor by the New York City Police Department for saving the life of a fellow officer is inspiring: please take a look at his website.

Hi
I am contacting your organization in an effort to spread the message of discriminatory remarks made by the Commission on elections against the LGBTI Community in the Philippines. I have been contacted by the producers of this video, Mr. Jethro Cuenca Patalinghug, who lives in the Philippines. Mr. Patalinghung has personally asked me to help him here in NYC to spread the message. We would like to know if it is at all possible if you can somehow link this video to your organizations Web Site. We are trying to make as many people within the Asian and Pacific Islander community aware of what has been going on in the Philippines. Our brothers and sisters abroad need our help in trying to spread the Universal message of claiming that WE ARE NOT IMMORAL. A simple link will help us spread this well made Video which can be viewed on YouTube at the following link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ6r1ri8gNw (embedded below)
We would also like to encourage all the viewers of the video to post or create their own "I am Not Immoral" video and post it to the YouTube Video Responses.
Consolidated reactions of different LGBTI individuals from the Philippines resulting from the discriminatory and unjust act of the Commission on Elections when they rejected the LGBTI political party Ang Ladlad to run for the 2010 Elections on the grounds of "immorality".

Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, C.M. is the Senior Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, a large congregation of progressive Christians. On Sat. Jan. 9, he talked to LYC Toronto about the relationship between sexuality and spirituality. He assured the attentive audience that GLBT people have no reason to believe that there is any conflict between their sexuality and Christianity. True Christianity embodies God's love for all people without exception or condition. He illuminated his talk with the story of his personal growth from a child of fundamentalist parents in rural New Brunswick to senior pastor, energetic fighter for equal rights for all, implacable opponent of ignorance and bigotry. The history of the fight for equal rights, in which Brent has been involved for more than 30 years, rounded out the talk. This fight has progressed much further in Canada than in most other countries, but he reminded us that even in Canada this fight is far from won, and that in some other countries GLBT people are still so disadvantaged that they can be imprisoned or even executed merely for attempting to express their sexuality. The audience showed by its questions at the end of the talk that they are very interested in this subject and are eager to learn more. LYC Toronto thanks Brent for taking time from his busy schedule to talk to us.

Footnote from Paul:
This was our first Potluck at St. Andrew's, a modern building adjacent to the subway and ample parking. We were in a different room than the one we will normally be in, but it should prove to be a good place to hold our potlucks in the future.
Although our last two locations have been churches and our guest speaker this time was from MCC, LYC-Toronto is not a faith-based club, and we embrace members and guests from all religions, or none. Nor are we a political or activist group, but a social club.
That being said - and not being a churchgoer or much of an activist myself - I now understand how Brent has the ability to move my friends to tears with his church sermons. I was greatly moved by his history of gay rights here, and he reminded us that not only has he been honoured as a Member of the Order of Canada - remarkable that a gay rights activist should receive one of our country's highest honours - but also posesses a bullet-proof vest, dating back to when he performed the first same-sex marriages here in Toronto.
Unfortunately, most of the photos taken at the potluck didn't turn out so well, so I won't be posting any this time around.
Pride parades in all metros, the historic Delhi High Court's verdict on Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, relaunch of India's first gay magazine Bombay Dost, the Indian Election Commission's decision to recognize transgender as a separate category... the pink flag is rising over India, queer (or LGBT - lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender) visibility is increasing.
Mainstream Indian cinema too has recognized this to an extent, with queer characters in several recent films (still mostly negative though). But there are still many undiscovered, unseen films with queer themes that have neither reached the movie hall nor had a platform to reach wider audiences. These are the small budget, independent films, short films, documentaries and projects by media students.
Kashish - Mumbai Queer Film Festival, 2010 is an attempt by Solaris Pictures and Bombay Dost to unearth these films and showcase them, celebrating the creativity of the filmmakers (whether heterosexual or queer) and the increasing visibility of the queer community. The festival will offer cinema as a medium to understand what being queer means today and how it impacts both the queer community and the society at large.
"Our vision is to not only encourage original Indian queer cinema but also showcase it to queer and mainstream audiences both, in order to make them aware about Indian queer thought, desire and expression," says Sridhar Rangayan, festival director. "We want to reach out to as many Indian filmmakers and audiences as we can."
Bombay Dost has been screening queer themed films, both indigenous and those made abroad, for nearly six years. Known as 'Sunday High', these events are held twice a month, yet there is a felt need to have a film festival such as Kashish to bring together the audience, the films and their makers.
Kashish will be held between April 22 and April 25, 2010, and will be spread across two venues in Mumbai - one in the city and one in the suburbs. Features, short films, documentaries and experimental films will be screened, highlighting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters and stories. The films will explore the diverse realities, complexities, joys and sorrows that make up the Indian queer experience as well as celebrate, reclaim, and explain LGBTQ identities while engaging and entertaining audiences.
Eminent personalities from films, art, fashion and media and queer activists will be part of Kashish selection committee and jury for its competitive sections, which will carry awards.
The festival will push the envelope even further by including films made outside India but those which relate to the Indian experience - films from the Indian Diaspora. Several prominent desi filmmakers from the US and the UK will exhibit their films at Kashish. In addition, two internationally acclaimed curators will showcase recent cutting-edge queer films from North America and South-East Asia in a special package.
A series of discussions about on Indian queer culture and its portrayal on film, and a photo-exhibition will also be a part of Kashish.
Kashish is being organized by Solaris Pictures and Bombay Dost.
Kashish is supported by "Movies That Matter" (an initiative of Amnesty International in the Netherlands).

Swimming and dining at Harbourfront
The swimming pool party was hosted by Bun and Wayne on Saturday July 25th at their beautiful waterfront condo. It rained in the afternoon but the 30 or so members who attended the event didn't mind as we swam and chatted in the indoor salt water pool. After warming up nicely in the sauna, it was back upstairs for drinks and light refreshments.
At 630pm we headed over to the restaurant in the condo complex. The whole group took up about 6 tables. We had to wait a little while for our meals since the place was not used to feeding a crowd, but the food was excellent.
After dinner there was more socializing at Bun and Wayne's place. We were treated to several classical piano pieces played by Paul J. who is a professional musician. Soon it was time for dessert. Bun and Wayne graciously served up several delicious, restaurant-quality desserts, followed by tea and coffee. There was more music and good fellowship with lots of jokes, laughter, and good conversation. Many people stayed past 10 o'clock.
It was a lovely afternoon and evening in elegant surroundings. We would like to thank Bun and Wayne for their generosity and kind hospitality in opening up their home to our members for this club event.

More accolades ...
Bun and Wayne have once again outdone themselves by hosting a swim party at their Harbourfront condo complex last July 25.
That Saturday afternoon started with a downpour but nothing could stop the fifteen LYCers from going swimming. Thanks to the indoor pool we did not mind if the outside was a total washout. We were happily swimming away in the luxurious comfort of a state-of-the-art pool with saltwater to boot. Of course, it is no swim party without the dry sauna after, where some seven of us huddled in a hot dry enclosure. It was getting too "hot" to stay too long in the sauna, the last thing we wanted was to get too "steamed up". Hence, around 4:30 all the swimmers headed back up to Bun & Wayne's penthouse.
Our organizer, DJ, was nice enough to bring some snacks and pop. Thanks DJ, it was a timely thirst quencher and fuel for the "hungry" swimmers. Robin tried piano playing while everyone relaxed and chatted. We were later joined by more members, which as of last count numbered about 28. At 6:15 pm, we all marched to the restaurant for dinner that lasted through 8:30 pm. Back at the penthouse, Bun and Wayne treated us with a wide range of scrumptious cakes and pastries, it was sugar heaven. There was also coffee, tea and wine. It was a fantastic treat by Bun and Wayne - we gave them a big round of applause as a gesture of our appreciation. While munching, sipping drinks and chatting, we were entertained by expert piano playing by a great guy whose name eludes me now. Was it John? Michael? Sorry, I can't seem to remember. But with my bad memory aside, it was a wonderful Saturday at the pool, dinner and dessert with LYC friends and with our ever so wonderful hosts, Bun and Wayne. For those who missed the fun and the treat, there is next year.
Ed
PS: Apologies to Paul Jessen, our splendid pianist, whose name escaped me.

Here are some (Members Only) photos from the event. Thanks go to Richard and DJ for these. I seemed to have missed a great party!
Paul.
I had the pleasure of hosting the Dim Sum in the absence of Ed who could not make it.
Although there were only nine of us, we had a nice time with the usual Bright Pearl good food, and conversation.
Special thanks to Bun, who served as translator for the serving staff, ordering the food, and informing us what the dishes were. (Thank goodness no chicken feet!)
Take Care,
Sid
Note from Paul: What's the point of Dim Sum without chicken feet? I will have to have a word with Bun, lol.
Here are a few photos from both the Dim Sum and the Potluck earlier this month.
On Saturday May 9, we had an excellent turnout at our monthly potluck. The food was delicious and Scott and Jason from the Inside Out Festival informed us of the wonderful events over the period of the festival - May 14 to 24. They brought with them a video from one of the films, which will be shown at the festival - a moving film about an Asian guy feeling pressure to get married even though he had a boyfriend who had very special feelings for him. Everyone received a program for the festival and there was a draw for two vouchers for tickets to a show of the winner's choice.
A much smaller group (around 30) attended the April 11th potluck, I imagine due to the fact that it was the Easter Holiday weekend.
In spite of the small group, there was plenty of good food, and everyone had their fill of the main course and desserts.
I had fun conducting a game of Charades with eight contestants, and there were a lot of laughs while they acted out their clues. Of course, as usual, everyone received a "prize". We have no losers in our group!
Hopefully our May 9th potluck will be better well attended. I hope to see you then!
Sid
A nice round figure of 10 gathered at the Masa Japanese Restaurant on Saturday March 28th, with an even number of Asians and Non Asians, including three Asian non members who read about the lunch on our website. This was the first event they have attended other than a potluck, which they have attended in the past couple of years.
The food was good, and conversations were varied, from politics to movies.
The event lasted about an hour and a half, and we left the restaurant around 1:30 full and happy.
See you at the next potluck, April 11th.

Hello LYC Members and friends:
We had a nice group attend our monthly potluck on Saturday March 14th. There were several "first timers" who attended as guests, and from remarks heard, they had a great time, and will be returning. Also, an Asian/Non Asian couple are becoming members this week.
One of the reasons the potluck was a success, besides the great food, was a very interesting slide presentation by our former President Terry, which he called "The Faces Of Cambodia". It was doubly interesting for people like me, who had never seen any photos or commentary about Cambodia. Thank you Terry for a very nice presentation.
Hope to see many of you at the next potluck, April 11th, which is Easter Weekend.

We had a fair number of members and guests attend our Valentine's Day Potluck on February 14th.
Besides the great food and intermingling of everyone, am sure that all who attended will agree with me when I say the highlight of the evening was a mini concert by LYC's good friend Rodel San Miguel.
Because it was Valentine's Day, Rodel chose a wonderful selection of songs to entertain us. One highlight being "What Kind Of Fool Am I?", from the Broadway musical, "Stop The World I want To Get Off". Rodel pointed out that it won the Grammy for the best record back in the 60's. Quite different from what we hear now as "music". (But that's only my opinion.)
Another favourite of the evening was "I Am What I Am" from the musical "La Cage". Rodel's version was as good or even better than some I have heard. Following a few other songs, Rodel topped of his performance with his rendition of The Four Season's hit, "You're Just Too Good To Be True", currently featured in the musical "The Jersey Boys", now playing in Toronto.
We mustn't forget Rodel's friend Raymond on the piano, who favoured us with background music during the evening, and accompanied Rodel beautifully during his performance.
All in all, a wonderful evening, and I feel sorry for those who missed it. Lucky for us, Rodel consented to come back again sometime. We will look forward to that!
Rodel can been seen singing a variety of songs on YouTube. Just enter Rodel San Miguel.
Take Care,
Sid
Footnote from Paul: Yes, indeed a wonderful evening, thank's to Rodel. We have asked him to let us know when he's singing at any other venues around town so that we can alert our members! Also, many thanks go to Ed, our VP, for filling in for DJ that night. DJ was present to hear Rodel, but wasn't feeling too good and had lost his voice and therefore sat this event out. We hope DJ will get well soon!

Five hearty souls braved the chilly air to come to brunch. We had a great time chatting and the food was exquisite. The smaller group allowed us more intimacy and a chance to get to know each other better as well as laugh and chat. The owner saw to our every need and as the restaurant was not very busy, we had our pick of the buffet which offered a great selection of tasty Indian dishes.
Stefano
Thanks Stefano for the write-up and for hosting! Hope to have some photos for you all later - Paul.
We had a pretty good crowd at the Potluck considering the weather and the fact that it was so soon after all the Christmas and New Year's parties. We thanks those members who renewed their memberships at the potluck.
Our guest speaker, El-Farouk Khaki, who was there with his partner Troy Jackson, gave us a very interesting talk on AIDS in Africa and the work that his organization, Africans in Partnership Against AIDS (APAA), is doing in regards to providing services to Africans living with HIV/AIDS and fighting the stigma surrounding it. El-Farouk was the NDP candidate running against Bob Rae in Toronto Centre in the last federal and bye-elections.
El-Farouk also talked about his work regarding immigration and refugees with HIV/AIDS and those seeking to escape discrimination and violence based on gender, sexual orientation and religion. The founder of Salaam, a support group for queer Muslims, he talked about what it was like to be gay in the broader Muslim community and also to be Muslim in the gay community. He touched upon some of the reasons there is an increase in HIV infections in North America amongst heterosexual women and young gay men. There was a lively Q & A session after his talk.
More about El-Farouk can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El-Farouk_Khaki
There's a link to APAA on our "Other Places ==> HIV/AIDS Related" web page:
http://www.apaa.ca/
They also have a Facebook group that can be located with a simple search.
Some people might think that perhaps the subject of HIV/AIDS is a little "heavy" for our potluck presentations, but it's very important for us to not lose sight of some of the issues that still plague our community and others around the world. For example, I'm glad that Pride is reaching out to bring awareness to the plight of gays still living in communities not so friendly as ours here in Toronto. If we are healthy and enjoying life, we owe it at least partly to activists like El-Farouk and others who have gone before, and we cannot afford to become complacent, or to ignore people less fortunate than us through no fault of their own.
We would all like to thank El-Farouk for coming along to LYC and giving us such an interesting and informative talk!

A large number of members and guests attended the Christmas Potluck. Everyone was in a Holiday mood while enjoying the great food.
Following dinner, an awaited Santa (Wesley) entered the room with his two handsome elf helpers, (Robin and Mike). Members were given numbered tickets earlier and as the elves drew the tickets, several members got to sit on Santa's lap, or vice versa, and receive their Christmas gift, all of which were especially nice this year.
When all gifts were given out, our President DJ invited Wesley to join him, and he and Stefano presented Wesley with a lovely plaque thanking him for his service to the Club over the years. Wesley has been our Vice President for some time, and found it necessary to retire this year. The group showed their appreciation with a great round of applause.
A lovely spread of dessert was served, which everyone enjoyed. All in all, it was a great Christmas potluck, and we thank all members and guests who attended.
Sid

A larger crowd than we've had recently was on hand Saturday evening for the November potluck. There were several "guests" and "first timers" attending, after inquiring how they heard about LYCT, they answered "on the Internet", specifically our website. It's nice to know that others besides our members are logging on to it. I usually ask as they are leaving, if they enjoyed themselves etc., but because I had to leave early I was not able to do it this time. Here's hoping they will return, and perhaps become members.
The highlight of the evening, besides the great food, was an excellent slide presentation by our President DJ, of his visit to Capetown South Africa last year. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the great pictures and information generally not known about Capetown. Thank you DJ for a great presentation.
It was also nice to see two past Presidents attending, Addison and Terry.
Hope to see you at our bowling event on the 23rd, hosted by member Dave Kerbel.
Take Care,
Sid,
Membership Director.

A very informative and entertaining audio-visual presentation from Carl, our new treasurer, with some interesting and stimulating slides! It traced the history and culture of homosexuality in China, the ancient and very explicit gay art, gay Emperors, the Legend of the Cut Sleeve, and the dark days of the Cultural Revolution. He also included an explanation of the Chinese words "Long Yang", and then went on to describe the flourishing gay scene in China today, offering tips on how to meet Asian guys and explore the scene online.
A real surprise and delight was Carl's "A Capella" rendition of the Joni Mitchell song "Both Sides Now" at the end of his talk. It was very touching, and seemed to link perfectly with the trials and tribulations of gays in China (and elsewhere!) in their search for love and acceptance. Thank you Carl!

We had a small attendance at the potluck (28), likely because it was raining (again!), and we thank those who did attend, and no one melted in the rain!
For those who were absent, you missed a great presentation from Stefano, with photos, of the time that he spent teaching in Korea. Everyone enjoyed it, and thank you Stefano. Of course, there was great food as usual, and intermingling of members.
Hope to see more of you attending next month!

Yes, a very enjoyable presentation from Stefano - informative and fun! Here are some photos from the event (for Members only)
I had the pleasure of hosting the annual LYC picnic at Hanlan's Point. There were 17 members attending. A perfect picnic spot was found, (hopefully we can get the same one next year), not too far from the ferry docks, but secluded enough for privacy.
There were a lot of laughs and silliness during lunch, (we brought our own lunches), and everyone had a good time. After lunch, Ming and Jorge got some exercise batting balls back and forth, (Ah, to be young again!), while the rest of us engaged in conversation and getting to know one another better (Some had never met before).
After enjoying the perfect weather, sunny and warm with a gentle breeze, the majority of the group were anxious to go to the "clothing optional" beach, but six of us headed for home, recalling that this was the best picnic in recent years.

Harbourside Condominiums on the waterfront, was the location for the swim party and dinner, hosted by Bun and Wayne. It was one of the best attended events we have had, with 22 swimmers, and 35 people for dinner.
The group met at their penthouse condo by 3:30, at which time Bun escorted those who were going to swim, to the pool. The rest of us went out to the patio, but the weather was threatening, and so we went back to the condo, and enjoyed conversation, sandwiches, chips and soft drinks etc.
The weather cleared and the sun came out and we headed back to the patio, later joined by the "swimmers", who apparently had a good time in the pool. Everyone went back to the condo, for a rest before going to dinner. At that time we were treated to a "mini concert" on the piano, by Mario, our former treasurer. Thanks Mario, it was lovely.
At 6:30, we walked over to the next building where the "Rendezvous" is located, and 35 LYC Members invaded the restaurant. Everyone had different meals and separate checks, but the capable staff handled it all very well.
After dinner, the majority of the group went back to the condo, where Bun served dessert.
All in all, a lovely day, and we must thank Bun and Wayne for being the bests of hosts for a very popular and well attended event.
Sid
===============
Thanks, Sid. I can confirm that the swimmers had a great time! There were many more in the pool compared to last year and everyone stayed in the water a lot longer. On top of his jet-lag, Michael wore himself out whacking our new member Richard with a plastic "noodle" but was able to sleep it off later after desserts!
Bun and Wayne pulled out all the stops when it came to desserts, served on their best china. As well as after dinner drinks, there were several kinds of tea, mountains of chocloate éclairs and two cakes - one decorated with the words "LYC Swim Party" - delicious! It must have taken them a lot of time preparing everything.
As well as more piano playing by Mario, we also enjoyed a recital by Paul Jessen, an accomplished pianist as well as organist who had just returned from giving a concert in Montreal. Music included works by Beethoven, Albeniz and Debussy as well as some popular material. Thanks Paul and Mario!
The weather could actually have been a lot worse. I was down at Ashbridges Bay yesterday and witnessed all the tree branches down and one large tree just ripped out of the ground by the wind gusts.
As Sid said, it was one of the best attended events outside of the potlucks, and I would venture to say that it was one our best ever LYC events since ICONIFW. Bun and Wayne, we have to thank you so much for hosting such a great party, and for all the work you put into it! Hopefully your cat has forgiven you by now for allowing so many strangers trespassing on his territory, lol.
Paul
For members of LYC-Toronto, some photos (actually, quite a lot)! Thanks DJ, Ed, Sid and Stefano for taking them.
About 40 members and guests attended our June Potluck on Saturday the 14th. We were pleased to welcome a few guests attending for the first time, and I also signed up two new members.
Due to circumstances, our scheduled guest speaker had to cancel, and I came up with a game at the last minute, my version of the popular game show "Password". The four contestants were Bruce, Wendell, Dave and Carl, who all showed their expertise of English words.
The winner was Carl, the only Asian contestant. Congratulations Carl. As per usual, there are no losers in our games, and all four contestants received a nice prize. The game was well received by the attending group, and there were a few tense moments, and plenty of laughs.
If you weren't there, you missed a fun night, and we hope that you will attend our next potluck on July 12th.
Photos of the evening are posted in the member's area of the website.

Seventeen members and guests gathered on May 24th for Dim Sum at our usual venue, The Bright Pearl Restaurant, on Spadina in Chinatown.
Our host Wesley was pleased to see so many turnout for his event, including some out of town guests from Grand Rapids Michigan, New York, Arizona and Windsor, Ontario.
It was also the first Dim Sum for our President DJ's partner Arnold, who recently arrived from the Philippines.
The food was good and plentiful as usual, and the owner and staff always treat us well.
These smaller gatherings allow members to get to know one another better in a pleasant setting. Perhaps we'll see you at the next one.

Nine of our members showed up April 20 to bowl at Thorncliffe Bowling. There were spare seats for those who would have needed a ride. The laughter was contagious as many had not bowled in years and the scores showed it. However, everyone had a huge amont of fun.
The event was organized by Rod as his last act as a member of the LYC committee. At the end, before people had changed out of their shoes, our President DJ presented Rod with a thank you card for his service.
As has become the custom following LYC events (even the pot luck), some people go out for coffee or dinner and this was no exception, although there was no requirement that all go and indeed only half those in attendance did so.
This time, despite some people wanting to bowl 5-pin, we agreed to all bowl together using the 10-pin alleys. We were told that in the Maritimes, some people use the 5-pin balls but 10-pins. Many suggested that we rotate and next time bowl 5-pin. Amongst those present, several asked for LYC to have a bowling event again in the future and the committee will certainly take this into account.
As President, I am very happy that so many enjoyed their afternoon, and I look forward to seeing you at the next bowling event.
